I’ve been prepping panicked actors for last minute accented roles & castings for the best part of two decades. And, whilst there’s little I love more than providing the salve to your accent stresses, it wasn’t long before I found myself wondering about a better way…
Wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have to get stressed at all?! Wouldn’t it be better if you were equipped with a trusted approach to acting in an accent before the requests even hit your inbox? What if those last minute accent requests could fill you with excitement rather than dread?
That’s how my signature, three phase approach to teaching & coaching actors in accents came to be.
I designed EMPOWER > EMBODY > CONNECT with one very simple goal in mind: to equip you with a trusted, reliable approach to acting in an accent. One that you can use time and time again, character after character and accent after accent.
So, how does it work?
When it comes to acting in accents, the best thing any actor can do is EMPOWER yourself with the mindset, knowledge, tools and strategies for approaching, understanding and unpicking them. That way you waste less energy on worry and can get on with the business of communicating. The EMPOWER phase sets you up with those foundational necessities.
But great accent work is so much more than just understanding pronunciation patterns and doing the ‘right’ sounds. The new sounds, shapes, rhythms and intonation patterns must also be grappled with practically, physically. In the second phase we work to find the most effective ways for you to get the sounds and shapes of a new accent into your muscle memory so they feel familiar and comfortable enough to use to express yourself. EMBODY is the antidote to being in your head!
The final phase exists because being able to do an accent is one thing and acting in one is something different entirely. CONNECT is about working together to find the best way to integrate all this accent stuff with your acting stuff. It's about ensuring you have tools and processes up your sleeve that suit the actor you are and enable you to stay connected whilst sounding consistent - even in those emotional moments.
